Cross-section is a 'post-minimalist' saxophone quartet. It was written to see what happens when minimalism gets bored with itself, when repeating patterns start to mutate, corrupt and turn into something more irregular.

Written in 1997, the first performances were given by the Malarky and Kintamarni saxophone quartets at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK. The piece lasts about ten minutes and requires a high level of technical proficiency.

"Musical ideas are interspersed amongst the quartet like the ball at a football match but the result is a rewarding work to perform requiring good group work. A pleasing addition to the repertoire".

'Wood-notes', Association of Woodwind Teachers, March 2005 (vol.21).

It is here to give saxophonists who might be interested in playing the piece an idea of how it sounds. It is not a promotional recording.
